The day I turned 26 years old, I was on my own on Lake Malawi in a kayak, so my host family told me we had to celebrate my birthday when I came back. And we did so this weekend.
Birthday with Anja
First, when I came home to Lusaka, Anja (
blog) surprised me with a birthday card, 250 g Norwegian chocolate, mackerel in tomato (2 cans from Norway) and homemade jam (Noras). Last year I got champagne, condoms and lubricants, but I don't know which one is the best :p
This years gifts from Anja was just what I wanted/needed though, and I've already finished the chocolate and the mackerel. Anja had also made homemade bread/buns while I was away, so we had brown cheese and jam on them. The best meal I've had in ages!
Birthday with my host family
On Saturday I was at home working on my exam and my host father had went out (buying cake?) and the rest of the family said they had to do some erends. After a couple of hours they came back and they sang the birthday song for me.
It's a tradition that the person cuts his/her own cake, whipe cream all over the face, and being fed by another person. Daniel wanted to feed me, so he grabbed a fork and shoved some cake in my mouth. Then David (my host dad) said he would be holding a speech (but thankfully it was just a few words) before we ate the cake.
Dinah, my host sister, has been placed at the college, where she is renting a bed (share a room with 2 other girls where they cook and sleep) but was at home this weekend. It was the first time I'd seen her in over a month. She loves taking pictures of herself with my camera. but I'll post only one.
